TIPS FOR MAKING THIS EASY BAKED FRENCH FRY RECIPE (OR OVEN FRIES)

These flavorful oven fries are an easy baked French fry recipe that every home chef needs up their sleeve! It's just a given that when I make venison burgers for supper, the kids also want baked oven French fries. The smell of homemade French fries baking always makes everyone super hungry. Or mostly hangry. Either way, we don't have to wait long! These tasty oven fries are ready in less than thirty minutes from prepping to serving.

I used to think that homemade French fries were always soggy, tough and overall unappealing. As it turns out, I was doing everything wrong. The main reason these oven fries work is because of the Yukon gold potatoes. This variety has a soft, yellow flesh and a tender skin. When Yukon gold potatoes are tossed in olive oil and roasted in the oven, they get a delicious, puffy crust.

How to make oven fries | easy baked French fry recipe

Alright, let's gather up our supplies and make some homemade baked oven fries! Today I am using small-ish sized Yukon Gold potatoes. Typically, I would use standard sized potatoes, but this is what was available at the store this week. To feed 4-6 people, plan on using 1 ½ to 2 pounds of potatoes. Instead of actually weighing the potatoes, I plan on one normal-sized potato per person.

Once we get our potatoes, the next step is to slice them into one-inch pieces. I first cut the potatoes in half lengthwise, then again into fourths. Next up, cut the slices into French fries!

Place the French fries skin-sized down on the prepared baking sheet. Drizzle with olive oil and toss to coat. Sprinkle with plenty of salt and freshly ground pepper.

Bake at 475 degrees for about 20 minutes. My potatoes were small, so my fries were fully cooked after eighteen minutes. If your wedges are extra thick, they may need to go longer. Position the oven rack in the middle of the oven or even in the lower portion to prevent the fries from burning before they are fully cooked through.

CAN THESE OVEN FRIES BE MADE IN AN AIR FRYER?

French fries are SOOO last year. Meet air fried fries! These flavorful fries can be roasted in the oven or baked in anAIR FRYER! I plan one-half of a potato per person and slice them into long, slender, spears. Line a sheet pan with parchment paper and space the potato slices on the sheet in a single layer, with spaces between. Drizzle with olive oil and season with salt, pepper and finely chopped thyme. Roast at 475° for about twenty-five minutes, or until tender when pierced with a fork.

One thing that isn't necessary but makes life easier is having an additional rack for the air fryer. I'm typically cooking for my family of five, and they tend to get hangry if I'm cooking the food in sessions. This BASKET (rack?) has allowed me to cook twice as much in the same basket at the same time.

VARIATIONS FOR THIS OVEN FRENCH FRY RECIPE

When I go to a restaurant that serves seasoned french fries, I have a very hard time resisting! This easy baked French fry recipe is no different! It can be seasoned or dipped any which way.

When the garden is bursting with fresh herbs, I love to toss the fries with finely chopped fresh rosemary, thyme or parsley. If the garden isn't producing, dried herbs are always an option! Any spice grinders that contain peppercorns, sea salt and seasonings are delicious: lemon pepper, garlic, herbs de Provence, ranch powder, za'atar. The list goes on and on!

Another way to add an extra oomf to these oven baked fries is by creating a unique dipping sauce. One of my favorite dipping sauces is a mixture of equal parts mayonnaise and sriracha. It's gonna give these fries a definite kick! I also like making a honey mustard sauce by mixing equal parts honey and stone ground mustard. Get creative!
