An Omaha man has been sentenced to more than 11 years in prison after he pleaded guilty to carrying out two armed robberies at local banks.
Riek Kuany, 25, was sentenced in federal court Friday to 140 months in prison after he pleaded guilty to two counts of bank robbery and one count of brandishing a firearm during the commission of a violent crime. He admitted to robbing two Omaha banks at gunpoint during April 2023.
According to Kuany’s plea agreement, the first robbery took place on April 6, 2023, at the First Interstate Bank near 47th and L Streets. Kuany and another man, who has not been charged, entered the bank wearing ski masks and gloves. Both men pointed handguns at bank employees before Kuany slid a bag across the counter and demanded money.
Bank employees took $6,584 from cash drawers and put it in the bag. Kuany and the other men fled in a stolen SUV driven by an unnamed third party.

The next robbery took place on April 11, 2023, at a Bank of the West location near 87th Street and West Maple Road. Kuany was alone during the second robbery and wore a hair net and medical face mask. He again pointed a handgun at the bank employees and demanded money.
Kuany was given $10,963 from the Bank of the West branch, and he fled in a gold Jeep.
In addition to the prison sentence, Kuany was also ordered to pay $17,547 in restitution to the banks. Kuany faced a minimum of seven years in prison and a maximum of life.
