  • The value of bulls in commercial herds goes beyond the‘relative’ value typically ascribed to them in market pricing, saysa Texas A&M AgriLife Extension Service expert.

“In publications referencing cattle values for commercialproducers as well as reports from beef breed associations, thevalue of a bull is often given as equivalent to the average valueof five weaned calves,” Joe Paschal, AgriLife Extension livestockspecialist based in Corpus Christi, says in an Extension newsrelease.

“This has been a long-held comparison for determining the valueof a bull, but it really doesn’t take into account all aspects ofwhat bulls provide to the herd.”

Paschal says the value of one bull to five weaned calvesfluctuated over the past several years.

“At least up until around 2010, producers paid less than 50percent of the value of those five calves on a bull,” Paschalexplains.

“Then from 2011 until 2015, producers began to pay more, including up to 100 percent of the value of five calves in 2013.Then in 2015, producers paid up to 150 percent of the value of fivecalves for one bull.

“And weaned calf prices dropped in 2016, the ratio dropped backto about 115 percent—between $5,000 and $5,250—closer to theaverage value of the five calves.”

But this ratio doesn’t fully reflect the additional value bullssupply to the herd, Paschal says.

“Bulls supply the genetics for the next generation ofreplacement females in most commercial herds, except those strictlyusing terminal crossing,” he says.

“It should be remembered that bulls are more than just ‘cowfresheners’ as my former colleague, Rick Machen, retired AgriLifeExtension livestock specialist in Uvalde, was fond of saying. Assuch, their value goes beyond the market price for five head ofcalves.”

Paschal said if a bull is used for three years and the producerdoes not introduce any outside female replacements into the herd, that bull will then be responsible for up to 87 percent of thecowherd’s genetics.

“A lot of products and equipment are touted as being the bestinvestment a cattle producer can make, but a good bull is the onlything that can really match that description,” Paschal says.

“If you maintain a closed herd, the genes entering the cow herdwill come completely from the bulls you select, and that’s a hugecontribution—for better or worse—to the herd’s overall geneticmakeup.

“When you look at it from that perspective, you see just howvaluable a good bull is to a commercial cow herd.”

Bull Value to Commercial Herd Exceeds ‘Relative’ Value

Beverly and I would like to wish everyone a Happy and Healthy2018. January has always been a symbol for setting goals and havinga fresh look at life. Resolutions in our house go by the wayside byFebruary, but our goal setting seems to be on a

bit more of a solid foundation. It seems as though this yearhas

many puzzles as to what we can expect. Far be it for me topredict what will be in store for the cattle industry. Events andactivities beyond our ability to control will have a great

impact on our profitability; some positive and othersnegative.

The feeder prices have held steady while the futures on fatcattle are more volatile. With the surplus in corn, I would assumethat more farmers with facilities will try to add value to theircorn by feeding livestock. I think the export/import markets willimpact prices as well. I was told that the export marketcontributes about $30 per hundred weight in the fed beef market. That would be a vital area to hold on to. The agricultural industryoverall is certainly impacted by the global markets.

One area we can control is the production of quality beef whichis desired both domestically as well as in the foreign market.Limousin certainly has a role of ensuring quality beef, especiallyin the natural market. We have made great strides in our qualitywithout adding chemically fed-on pounds. Our genetics have produceda product which is desired in the meat market. Increased qualityplus our ability to yield creates a demand for Limousin siredfeeders. As the commercial producers get ready to buy bulls for theupcoming breeding season, we need to make sure our bull offering isthe best it can be. Good luck to our breeders who will be offeringtheir

genetics for sale and their customers who will be purchasing theoffering.

An area that is uncontrollable in the beef industry is theenvironmental impact of drought. Last year, 2017, brought severedrought to all areas of the Heartland, and it was especiallysignificant in the North and South Dakota areas west of theMissouri River. According to the severe drought maps, dryconditions remain a problem for the northwest part of the Heartlandand ironically the southeast sections of Missouri. Hopefully, adequate moisture will be the norm for all the areas of theU.S.

As for Beverly and me, we are looking forward to the winter andspring sales of Limousin genetics and the opportunity to seeeveryone at those events. The Limousin activities in the Heartlandnot only bring producers together to make business decisions onwhich bulls and females to buy, but also brings people and friendstogether for the social contact as well.

We invite all Heartland Limousin breeders and other Limousinenthusiasts to attend the HLA general meeting, banquet, and benefitauction in Des Moines, Iowa, February 13 at the FFA Building on thestate fairgrounds.

Thank you for your continued support of the Heartland LimousinAssociation!

Dean and I continue to stay busy traveling throughout theMidwest for the Heartland. In addition to the Heartland states, wealso attend sales and other events across the United States. Thiskeeps us “on the road,” for many days during the year.

It’s always interesting to see what will welcome us when we turninto our driveway. We’ve encountered snow and ice at the end ofOctober and the first week of November this year. Then the weatherturned really nice; sunny and warm. The snow melted and it actuallyfelt like spring—even though the calendar said it was themiddle—end of November.

We arrived home from a trip at the end of November to find deepruts in the ditch by our house. Upon further inspection, wediscovered that a chunk had been taken out of a tree. It lookedlike a car either missed the curve or swerved to avoid something. It went into the ditch and the car was stopped by the tree.Following the direction of the ruts and the chunk out of the tree,it looks as though the front, right side of the car suffered thedamage.

Last year we came home to find that we had no water in thehouse. We

have a well and the pipe from the well to the house froze.Fortunately, we were able to put a heater in the well pump andthawed out the system. That is the danger of living in the countryand being gone during the cold winter months.

I’ve talked about my biggest fear in a previous Heart Beatcolumn—finding little creatures in the house. That happened in thesummer of 2016 when we discovered three mice in our home. We wereable to trap two and one died in the living room floor. Thankgoodness we haven’t seen any more of those little crittersaround.

With the upcoming sale season fast approaching, I would like toleave the members with this message: GROW.

G – Get involved in your state, regional and nationalassociations.

R – Read cattle publications and become knowledgeable about theindustry.

O – Organize your life, put first things first.W – Welcome newbreeders into your association

and help them get acquainted with other Limousin members.

We look forward to seeing everyone at the sales, annualmeetings, banquets, and benefit auctions. These events are a greatopportunity to reconnect with seedstock and commercial breeders, friends, and other Limousin enthusiasts. It’s the people in thebreed who connect us all together as one big family!
