a little about the mango lassi

Lassi is a traditional yogurt-based drink originating from India. It resembles a mango milkshake and is made by blending yogurt with water. It often includes various flavors such as mango, rose, or mint. Lassi is known for its creamy texture and refreshing taste, making it a popular beverage in Indian cuisine. It can be enjoyed as a cooling and soothing drink, especially during hot weather or after spicy meals!

Just 4 ingredients

  • Mango: You can use fresh, frozen, or canned mango in this recipe. I don’t recommend using ice cubes, even when using fresh mango, because they water down the drink.
  • Yogurt: I love rich, protein-packed Greek yogurt, but you could use regular, low-fat, or even plant-based yogurt in this lassi. I’ve also had success with kefir if you want a stronger punch of probiotics!
  • Milk: A splash of milk will give this mango lassi a nice consistency. Feel free to use your favorite (low-fat, 2%, plant-based, whatever you have!).
  • Sweetener: Honey works well here, but you could also use agave, sugar, or stevia. Maple syrup tends to have a flavor that is too strong for this drink.

Sarah’s Tip

I love to finish off my lassi with a pinch of ground cinnamon, saffron, or cardamom. This adds a wonderful warmth to contrast with the fresh summer flavors.

It’s easy to make

Making a mango lassi follows the same steps as making a milkshake or smoothie.

  1. Prepare the ingredients: Peel and dice the mango, then set it on a plate and freeze for about 30 minutes. This will help it chill, which will contribute to the drink’s frosty consistency. Alternatively, you can use pre-frozen mango chunks (this is often more affordable than ripe mango anyway).
  2. Blend everything together: Blend everything together until smooth and enjoy!

how to pick a perfectly sweet mango

If you’re using fresh mangoes, you’ll want to make sure they’re very sweet. Look for one that’s speckled with red and orange. Give it a gentle squeeze, and it should be slightly soft—that’s a perfectly ripe mango!

make this lassi vegan

To enjoy a vegan version, swap the honey for agave and the yogurt for a plant-based low-fat yogurt.

Notes

Can I use fresh mango? If you didn’t use frozen mango, you can also choose to chill the mango lassi in the fridge after blending so it’s nice and cold when drinking. Enjoy!

Should I add ice?I don’t like to add ice cubes because it waters down the drink. Lassi is meant to be drunk cold from the fridge, and adding ice will melt and separate from the blended mango when stored in the fridge.

Storage:This smoothie can be kept in the fridge in an airtight jar for up to 2 days. Just give it a stir before enjoying it again.
