Album:StormbringerReleased:Nov'74Recorded:Aug-Sept'74Studio:Musicland Studios, Munich, Germany/The Record Plant, Los AngelesGenre:Hard rock/blues rock/funk rock/soulLabel:Purple(Europe, Oceania, South America),Warner Bros(North America & Japan)Producer:Martin Birch & Deep PurpleWith Deep Purple Mark 2 members Ian Gillian(Vocalist), and Roger Glover(Bassist)leaving the band some time in '73, Deep Purple Mark 3 came in like a wild fire.Deep Purple's first Mark 3 lineup album BURN featuring new band members such as David Coverdale (Vocalist fronted a local group called The Government which had played with Deep Purple on the same bill in '69 and saw an article in a copy of Melody Maker, which said that Deep Purple was auditioning for singers to replace Ian

Gillan.So

he and the band were familiar with one another, and after sending a tape and later auditioning), and Glenn Hughes(Bassist/Vocalist originally from the band "Trapeze") who joins Deep Purple to complete the MKIII line up in summer of '73.Deep Purple Stormbringer(9th/MK3's 2nd line up album 1974).The cover image of Stormbringer is based on a photo. On 8 July 1927 a tornado near the town of Jasper, Minnesota was photographed by Lucille Handberg.Definitely a classic band line up.Deep Purple now with two lead vocalist that would shape the new Purple sound with Glenn's funky soul feel and David's bluesy

style.In

addition with Glenn Hughes and David Coverdale there was now more influential styles in Purple's music and would expand ideas to create a 2nd Deep Purple MK3 album called "Stormbringer" which was the follow up album after "Burn".Deep Purple MK3 would continue to play earlier line up songs from previous era's such as "Highway Star" and "Smoke On the Water" on the "Burn" and "Stormbringer" tours in '74 into early '75(before Ritchie Blackmore's departure and teaming up with Ronnie James Did to join "Rainbow")but now with Hughes and Coverdale taking turns on verses.According to Deep Purple's MK3 and MK4 documentary "Phoenix Rising", Glenn had an opportunity to be the vocalist that he wanted to be in Deep Purple that he could not get with the earlier "Trapeze" band days.Glenn did not want to sing the "OOOHHSS and "AAAAAHHHSS" as a background vocalist, but wanted to be a part of David Coverdale's lead vocals. Therefore Deep Purple was now fit with two lead vocalist creating a stronger powerful band.Again this album would be Ritchie Blackmore's last album with this Purple line up(Mark 3).Ritchie Blackmore not rejoining Deep Purple until 1984 with the Mark 2 Purple line up(Ian Gillian, Ian Paice, Roger Glover, Ritchie Blackmore and Jon Lord).Stormbringer would become more of a Glenn Hughes(bassist and vocalist)and David Coverdale(lead vocals)album as well with its funk/soul/blues rock feel.According to Deep Purple's MK3 and MK4 documentary "Phoenix Rising" Jon Lord did not like the lyrics to the opening track("not my cup of tea" Lord cries) But I think the lyrics in STORMBRINGER are sick, as David belches out "Comin' out of nowhere Drivin' like rain stormbringer dance on the thunder again.Dark cloud gathering Breaking the day no point running 'Cause it's coming your way Ride the rainbow Crack the sky Stormbringer coming Time to die!!!!!This album will make you bleed OOOOHHHHH Yea!As you hear Glenn cry out in the song while Ian Paice does those unison quarter note triplets between the snare and toms.I tried to stick to Ritchie's way of playing this song like how it's heard on the original LP even though this is a heavily improvised piece of music.Check out the live version it's very alive, dangerous, energetic, and even a few measures longer with some excellent heavily instrumental pieces.I even wanted to mimic the way that Blackmore would play it live or in the studio by holding the slide rather than actually putting it on my finger and flipping between the bridge and neck pick up to get the Blackmore sound(as you can hear and see him do live), but again most importantly I wanted to add my own flare to it.I believe Ritchie Blackmore was using late '60's and early '70's Fender Stratocaster's(color's:black, sunburst, natural)with the larger headstock's as seen by guitar legends like Jimi Hendrix, Robin Trower, and even Tommy Bolin at times just to name a few.Ritchie Blackmore noticeable for using Fender Stratocaster's with scalloped(carved in)maple necks/fretboard for better playability and accurate comfortable bending.Blackmore also famous for using Marshall amp stacks throughout his rockstar career with Purple, and Rainbow.Ritchie seen with very few or no pedals, just reverb/delay, and a phase pedal.Don't forget all black clothing and '70's heels.Ladies, Gents, Deep Purple!
